Boating Safety is the Operator’s Responsibility

People ice surfingIf you plan on entertaining anyone on your boat, or you plan on renting a boat for you and your family, it is important to remember that everyone’s safety begins with you. As the operator of the vessel, you may think that whether or not your guests have a good time is your responsibility. Not so. Your primary objective is to make sure that everyone returns to shore healthy and well. Here are your responsibilities:

Before you head out on your boat, make sure that it is in proper working order. Take a look at the inside of the boat, and clear any tripping hazards, any dangerous chemicals, and anything else that could cause injury to your guests.

You cannot control the weather, but you can be prepared for it. Never leave the dock without first checking the weather. Very few boaters have the experience to handle a major storm in the middle of the ocean.

All safety equipment that is required by law should be on or in your vessel. Make sure that the equipment is in good condition. You and any guest aboard your boat should be outfitted with a life vest.

Float Plan

Always let someone know where you are going to be. Construct a float plan and give it to a friend or family member to hang on to.

Know Where You Are

Do not get so lost in entertaining your guests that you aren’t aware of your location. As the operator of the vessel, you should always know where you are. If something happens to your boat or someone on board, knowing your location may be vital.

Know the Law

Know the laws of the water. Practice navigation rules at all times, and obey waterway markers. Always maintain a safe speed for the conditions, and be respectful of other boaters.

There are some accidents on the water that cannot be avoided. That being said, it is always the responsibility of the operator to ensure that everyone returns back to shore as healthy as when they left. Follow these tips to have a fantastic, safe day out on the ocean.
