Located along the Lumber River in Robeson County, North Carolina, Lumberton was founded by General John Willis in 1787. Willis, who was an officer during the Revolutionary War, donated the land and named it Lumberton. At the time, the Lumber River was primarily used by the Navy for shipping lumber downriver. Today, the Lumber River has been given the distinction of being a National Wild and Scenic River and is enjoyed by fishers, kayakers, canoers, boaters, campers, swimmers, and many more recreational users.
