Defective Stryker Hip Replacements
The Stryker hip replacements subject to legal action contain an interchangeable neck component, designed to fit different body types. The Stryker Rejuvenate and Stryker ABG II, both of which included moving parts, were released in the late 2000’s. Unfortunately, since the interchangeable neck component is not a permanent fixture, the connection between the neck and femoral stem has the potential to grind, increasing the risk of metallic corrosion and releasing shards of metal and toxic chemicals into the surrounding tissue and bloodstream.
This creates a condition known as metallosis which is an adverse reaction to metals in the body. This can cause painful swelling, limited mobility, hip joint failure, pseudotumors and other serious conditions including instability and fracturing of the bone around the implant.
The toxicity of the metal ions absorbed by your body from the hip implant can cause kidney problems, rashes, sensory impairment, depression and mood problems, thyroid problems, and a condition called cardiomyopathy which caused enlargement and weakening of the heart muscle, according to the FDA.
Damages for Metal on Metal Hip Revision Surgery
Undergoing any surgery, is a traumatic, painful, and worrisome experience. Having to undergo hip replacement revision surgery is one to many for anyone to have to endure. In addition to the emotional and physical suffering, patients have to deal with the cost of the revision surgery which cost a lot of money and can cost even more if you are not insured.
Studies suggest that you can only get two hip replacements, each one lasting 10-15 years. After the second replacement, there is not enough bone left to insert a new replacement stem to affix to the leg. If you have to undergo a revision shortly after the first, as with most Stryker Rejuvenate and ABII patients, you may have to deal with the pain or sit in a wheel chair the rest of your life if the second replacement fails or you receive it at a younger age.
Information about the Stryker Hip Replacement recall and lawsuits
In July 2012, Stryker Orthopedics voluntarily recalled both models, the Stryker Rejuvenate and the Stryker ABG II. Thousands of patients received these implants between 2007 and 2012. It is documented that Stryker Orthopedics sold in excess of 25,0000 of the Rejuvenate and ABGII Hips during that time period.
The people who have received Stryker’s Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck hip implants are suing Stryker Orthopedics on the grounds that Stryker negligently released an allegedly defective product putting their lives at risk and causing them great harm. The plaintiffs also claim that Stryker obviously failed to test the device, and then went on to market the device as a “perfect fit” for young patients, misleading doctors and patients alike. They also believe that Stryker did not adequately warn their patients about the dangers of the metallic ions in your body, ions which when spread across the body can be toxic.
