Hernia Mesh Injuries Have Impacted Thousands of Lives, If Not More.

Injuries related to the use of surgical hernia mesh have been frequently reported and media coverage of this current medical problem has been vast.  Many hernia surgeries may involve mesh used to support the wound as it heals after the operation.  Unfortunately complications from the use of different varieties of surgical hernia mesh have resulted.  These complications vary and may include infections, pain, the need for additional surgeries and in some cases, death.

What Types of Surgeries Use Surgical Hernia Mesh?

The use of mesh to support healing wounds is not a new practice.  These devices have been used for many decades. The science and technology that leads to medical breakthroughs can also result in significant problems.  In the case of hernia mesh, new materials were developed to manufacture mesh devices and some of these materials have been found to be harmful for their intended uses.  A hernia can develop in many different parts of the human body.  In many cases involving hernias throughout the abdomen and stomach (among others), support is necessary to keep the tissue in place while the body heals from surgery.  If a wound has the need for support, it is very likely mesh may be used,  This means that a lot of people have had mesh implanted in their bodies using materials that could have unintentionally harmed them.

The Injuries and Pain

Some types of complications have resulted in mesh material that becomes adhered to the implant site, preventing the mesh from ever being able to be removed.  In other cases the mesh may migrate and require an additional procedure to retrieve the mesh from inside of the body.  It is possible for the body to also reject the mesh also requiring for its removal.  In some instances these situations create multiple problems because not only does the initial mesh have to be removed, the initial hernia may also require a revision.  Lastly, Infections are also a very serious reality for some hernia mesh patients as you must realize that infections are a potential risk for any surgery, let alone mesh surgeries that may also involve devices that may be prone to risks for complications.
