Driver Charged With DUI After Motorcyclist Dies in Lancaster County, SC Crash

A Fort Mill, SC man is dead after his motorcycle was rear-ended in Lancaster County, SC on Thursday, September 30.

Authorities say the accident happened around 11:50 p.m. on U.S. 521 near Edgewater Corporate Parkway in the Indian Land area. Ronald Hamilton, Jr, 41, of Fort Mill, was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle south on U.S. 521. A 2015 Acura Sedan was moving in the same direction when the Sedan rear-ended the motorcycle. Sadly, Hamilton was thrown from the motorcycle, and despite wearing a helmet, he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers report that the driver of the Sedan, 41-year-old Vickie Morell, also of Fort Mill, was arrested and charged with felony DUI involving death. She was not injured in the crash.

Unfortunately, South Carolina has one of the highest rates of DUI fatalities in the country. The Zebra, an online insurance brokerage, reports that about 30 percent of auto accident fatalities in the state were related to drunk driving. South Carolina ranks fifth in the nation for alcohol-related accident deaths. Motorists should always plan on having a designated driver, or using a ride share app, when drinking away from home.
