Monsanto Failed to Warn Roundup Users of Cancer Risks

“Roundup” is a brand name for a patented formula of the herbicide glyphosate. Monsanto developed Roundup and released it in 1974, hailing it as “environmentally friendly,” and claiming that it was safe for humans, animals, and other plants.

The use of Roundup in the agricultural community immediately took off, and Monsanto also enjoyed substantial retail sales of its consumer-packaged version of the product. In 1996, the use of Roundup exploded around the globe once genetically modified (GMO) “Roundup-ready” crops were patented and released. These glyphosate-resistant crops could be sprayed directly with heavy amounts of Roundup, allowing farmers to kill weeds without killing their crops.

A USDA researcher attributes the fact that “glyphosate is the most successful herbicide in history,” to the development of glyphosate-resistant GMO crops. They estimate that 90% of all GMO crops are herbicide-resistant varieties, most of them glyphosate-resistant. Farmers in over 160 countries spray an estimated 1.4 billion pounds of Roundup and similar chemicals per year.

Heavy use of glyphosate has infiltrated the environment, the food supply, and our bodies. Samples of midwestern streams taken by the USGS unearthed that 36% of them had detectable levels of glyphosate. Glyphosate was also found in the urine of individuals who lived and worked on farms in Southern California. Another study even discovered glyphosate in consumer food products, such as children’s cereals, oatmeal, and granola.

Heavy occupational exposure to Roundup was also suspected to have a link to an increased risk of cancer. A report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer partially confirmed this when they concluded that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Despite these concerns, Monsanto continued to insist that Roundup was “as safe as table salt,” and fought to suppress scientific evidence and discredit any reporting that suggested otherwise.

Roundup Cancer Lawsuits Result in Multimillion-Dollar Verdicts

Dewayne “Lee” Johnson was the first Roundup cancer victim to establish in court that Roundup knew about the cancer risks of their product yet failed to warn consumers and professional users. Johnson worked as a school groundskeeper, which tasked him with spraying many gallons of Roundup throughout the year.

When Johnson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014, he was suspicious that Roundup could have been the cause. He filed a Roundup lawsuit against Monsanto, which resulted in a $289 million award that included $250 million in punitive damages against the company. The award was later reduced to $78 million upon appeal.

Johnson’s lawsuit opened the floodgates to a Roundup class action lawsuit and more than 8,000 separate complaints filed against Bayer, the company that now owns Monsanto. It also revealed that Monsanto deliberately engaged in tactics to suppress evidence of Roundup’s risks rather than warn the public.

One Roundup cancer victim was awarded $80 million in damages by a jury, while a couple that had developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma separately was awarded a staggering $2 billion in damages, although this was later reduced.

Successful trials like these show that victims of Roundup’s carcinogenic risks in Columbia, SC can come forward and seek repayment for their medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other losses.

Jobs With the Highest Risk of Developing Roundup Cancer

Individuals who apply large amounts of Roundup year-round as a component of their job have the highest risk of developing associated cancer. These jobs include:

  • Farmers
  • Professional gardeners
  • Landscape workers
  • Groundskeepers

Note that “Roundup” is not the only product that contains glyphosate, the suspected carcinogen. Other brand names include:

  • Enforcer
  • Kleeraway
  • Bonide KleenUp
  • Bayer Advanced DuraZone
  • Spectracide
  • Hi-Yield Killzall
  • Rodeo

Individuals who bought consumer versions of any of these products and used them regularly on their lawns or home gardens may also be at risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Some may also have been exposed if they lived near or frequently traveled by properties where large amounts of Roundup was used — either by exposure to droplets drifting from the wind or through environmental exposures.

What Are the Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

Some Roundup exposure victims in Columbia, SC may not realize that their contact with the chemical glyphosate has increased their risk of certain cancers.

Symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma include:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen but painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Night sweats
  • Shortness of breath

There are also sub-diagnoses of types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that have been associated with exposure to Roundup. These include:

  • Follicular lymphoma
  • Hairy cell leukemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Mantle cell lymphoma
  • Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

If you have any of these diagnoses or symptoms of lymphoma, then seek a thorough diagnosis from a medical professional immediately. If you are diagnosed and have a history of exposure to Roundup or glyphosate, you can potentially file a Roundup cancer lawsuit against Bayer or join a Roundup class action lawsuit currently taking place.
