Back pain is a frequent symptom following a car accident. Back pain comes in many forms—upper back pain, middle back pain, lower back pain, and sciatica. Back health is something we often take for granted, until the pain from a back injury leaves you unable to work or move freely due to pain, or worse, completely incapacitates you. The sudden and jarring movements that occur in an accident often result in back pain and stiffness due to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons being forced to stretch and pull in excess of the typical range of motion.

In the majority of car accidents, the driver or passenger doesn’t know they are about to get hit, and their muscles are loose and relaxed. Stress is placed on the discs, joints, and ligaments as the result of the sudden and unexpected trauma. Auger & Auger is experienced in successfully representing people injured in car accidents and obtaining compensation for clients.

Back pain and stiffness following a wreck might appear immediately, or might not present until several hours later. Soft tissue back injury symptoms can include pain and stiffness at any location on the spine, from the hips all the way up to the base of the neck; difficulty sitting or standing due to muscle spasms; and a chronic ache. A more serious back injury can result in numbness or tingling in the extremities, pain radiating from the back down one or both legs, increased pain with bending at the waist, incontinence, and pain even when lying in bed.

The accident and injury attorneys at Auger & Auger advise you to obtain medical treatment right after the event causing the injury. If you don’t know if you should go to a hospital, call your family doctor for advice. Always call medic if you have symptoms of dizziness, radiating pain, or any numbness/tingling. If it is determined that you have a back injury, you will likely be placed on a backboard and transported to a local hospital.

If you are taken to the hospital by ambulance for your back pain following a car accident, the emergency room doctor will first decide whether it is safe to conduct range of motion tests. If you are not completely immobilized, the doctor will perform range of motion testing and nerve testing to pinpoint the location of the injury. X-rays can identify fractures, and an MRI or CT scan can identify soft tissue damage. Where nerve damage is suspected, an EMG will be performed.

Treatment for back pain starts with rest and pain relief. It is often recommended that non-steroidal anti-inflammatories be taken to relieve pain and swelling, as well as the application of ice to the affected areas. Once the swelling is reduced, heat may be applied. Prescription strength medication may be required. For persistent symptoms, further treatment should be sought from an orthopedic, chiropractor, or physical therapist. For very serious and difficulty to control pain, a steroid injection or even surgery may be required for pain management. For less severe back injuries, chiropractic spinal manipulation is recognized as being effective in the treatment of lower back pain. Treatment with a physical therapist may include traction, stretching exercises, electrical muscle stimulation, massage, and strengthening exercises.
