An evening walk with his dog sadly left a Charlotte man dead on Wednesday evening, after a speeding driver hit the pedestrian.
According to Charlotte officials, the accident happened on Wednesday evening, July 1. Charlotte resident Tran Tran was out walking his dog beside a busy road near Mallard Creek. An SUV driven by Waltavius Mims was going down the road at a high rate of speed, when for some reason the vehicle left the roadway, crashed into a mailbox, and hit Tran and his dog. Sadly, both Tran and his dog died at the scene.
CMPD officials have charged Mims with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving. They believe speed was a major factor in the crash, but are awaiting test results to determine if anything else contributed.
“Whatever he was doing, he wasn’t paying attention and it cost somebody his life,” Tran’s neighbor Chris Fuentes said.
Friends and neighbors set up a memorial for Tran, who they described as a caring and generous person. “Tran was the most loving, kind, giving individual that you’d ever want to meet. He never asked to be paid back for anything he did,” friend Linda Turner said.
Turner also added that she’s seen many close calls on the street where the accident occurred. “I’m out on this street. People are walking with their children all the time, people are walking their dogs all times of the day, and it’s never good.”
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), speeding is a major cause of car crashes in the state. In 2016, there were 369 speed-related deaths and 18,956 speed-related crashes. Drivers are advised to obey speed limits and always pay attention to their driving.
