The Most Dangerous Intersections in Charlotte

Makati_intersectionDriving in the city of Charlotte can be dangerous no matter what road you are on, but there are intersections that are considered more risky than others when it comes to accidents. Charlotte’s Department of Transportation released a list of the most dangerous intersections in the city. The same list was released just a year ago, and some intersections have switched places with others.

Four of the city’s most dangerous spots lay along College Street. The intersections of 7th, 8th, 9th and 12th Streets are to be crossed with caution. The other intersection is at College and Church. That is the same intersection where Cam Newton crashed last December.

According to drivers who travel near in the University say that the construction of the Blue Line Extension project has made getting around the area a headache. The area is more complicated and, if people aren’t paying attention, the chances of being involved in a collision skyrocket.

Angela Berry, an employee with CDOT, says of the area, “It’s a very different environment up there for drivers over what it was four or five years ago.”

Some intersections that used be considered quite dangerous are on their way to improving. Hawthorne Lane and 7th Street was the fifth most dangerous in the city last year. This year, it is ranked as the 30th most dangerous. Freedom Drive and Toddville Road was the 28th worst intersection last year. This year it sits at 79th.

Representatives of CDOT say that it normally takes two to three years for any improvements to an intersection to be apparent on data sheets. Crash data takes a bit of time to collect and is often not released for a year or more. Here are the intersections that made the Top 10:

  1. E 8th and N College
  2. S Church and W Hill
  3. E 9th and N College
  4. E 12th and N College
  5. E 7th and N College
  6. 3rd and 4th Connector and E 4th St at N Kings Dr
  7. E Sugar Creek and N Tryon
  8. E 6th St and N McDowell
  9. David Cox and Lakeview
  10. Cambridge Commons and Harrisburg
