The Most Useful Apps This Holiday Season

SaferRide appWe have talked several times about the best ways to avoid a DUI, especially during the holidays. Uber, designated drivers and taxis are all excellent options for getting home after a night of drinking. One of the best ways to get home, or most useful tools for finding your way home, is the SaferRide app, put forth by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Here’s how it works:

Top Button

When you click on the app, you open a screen with three buttons. The top button is useful for anyone who may be too drunk to drive but is still sober enough to carry on a conversation. “Get Taxi” will give you a list of local taxi services and their phone numbers. Hit the big red button for the taxi service you want to use and your phone dials. Once the dispatcher answers, you simply give your location and desired destination and a taxi is on its way.

Middle Button

If you are out of money or just too drunk to talk to anyone you don’t know, the middle button is for you. “Call Friend” will help you contact a friend for a ride with just the touch of a button.

Bottom Button

Let’s say that you are so intoxicated that you aren’t even sure where you are. Maybe you know the bar name, but you are unfamiliar with the area and can’t remember the name of the street you are on. “Where Am I?” will provide you with your current location and a map. You can then forward the location and map to a friend or to the taxi company.

This app from NHTSA may be a bit humorous, but it has a very serious intention behind it: keep drunk drivers off the road and everyone safe. While you have many options for getting home safely this holiday season, this may be the easiest of all to use. If you plan on drinking this holiday season, do yourself a favor and download the app before you leave the house.
