It is illegal to possess fireworks that spin on the ground, firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles and aerial fireworks in North Carolina and many other states across the nation. Most states do allow glow worms, snappers, string poppers, smoke devices and wire sparklers.
If you plan on celebrating the holiday and know that fireworks will be present, legal or otherwise, it is important to remember that any can be dangerous. Many have been seriously injured, and some killed, over the years due to accidents involving fireworks. Here are some recommended safety tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety.
1. Obey the Law
The most dangerous of fireworks are illegal in North Carolina. Obey local laws. If you want to see fireworks, attend a professional show.
2. No Children
Children should not be permitted to handle fireworks. Snappers that do not explode in the hand are typically safe, but anything that must be lit should only be done so by an adult.
3. Homemade Fireworks
Never experiment with homemade fireworks. The risk to your safety and those around you is simply not worth the thrill.
4. Duds That May Not Be
Never assume that a dud is a dud. If a firework does not go off, leave it alone and stay away from it. Wait for 20 minutes and then drop it in a bucket of water.
5. Stay Hands-Off
Do not hold fireworks in your hands. With the exception of sparklers, which can still pose a risk, there are no fireworks that are safely ejected from human hands. If you are going to light fireworks, do so on the ground.
6. Hose and Bucket
No matter what type of fireworks you are using this year, keep a bucket and a hose ready. Make sure that the hose is connected to the spigot and that it is ready to go in the event you need it.
Fireworks are illegal for a reason. They are dangerous, especially in the hands of the untrained. If you want to enjoy a spectacular show this holiday, find one to attend in your area. If you want to enjoy a bit of holiday spirit in your own backyard, stick to sparklers and snappers.
